Artists, Patrons, and the Public: Why Culture Changes
by Barry Lord and Gail Dexter Lord

In their new book, Barry and Gail Lord focus their two lifetimes of international experience working in the cultural sector on the challenging questions of why and how culture changes. They situate their discourse on aesthetic culture within a broad and inclusive definition of culture in relation to material, physical and socio-political cultures.

This book is intended for artists, students, and teachers of art history, museum studies, cultural studies, and philosophy, and for cultural workers in all media and disciplines. It is above all intended for those who think of themselves first as audience because we are all participants in cultural change.

Museum September-October 2010 issue

By Marta Braun, Director, Graduate Program of Photographic Preservation and Collections Management, Ryerson University.

This important and timely book by Barry Lord and Gail Dexter Lord helps us understand exactly what it is that we call 'culture' and how culture changes. I am impressed by the way the authors lay out basic definitions of words and even concepts that we have always take for granted without condescending to their readers. Gail and Barry Lord Speaking about Cultural Change in New York

Barry and Gail Lord, Tom Finkelpearl, Deborah Fisher and Ernesto Pujol engaged in a stimulating conversation on cultural change, based on the book Artists, Patrons and the Public: Why Culture Changes on October 27, 2011 at MagnanMetz Gallery, 521 West 26th Street, New York, NY 10001.

After almost two lifetimes working in the cultural field, including three decades as Co-Presidents of Lord Cultural Resources, the world’s largest cultural planning and management firm, Barry Lord and Gail Lord have realized that they have been involved in cultural change all over the world for forty to fifty years. Their newest book Artists, Patrons and the Public: Why Culture Changes advances a theory of culture as a whole along with seven principles of cultural change. New York City cultural leaders, representing the three cultural change agents outlined in the book, shared their insights:

  • Ernesto Pujol – ARTIST – Performance artist and social choreographer represented by MagnanMetz Gallery
  • Deborah Fisher – PATRON – Executive Director, A Blade of Grass
  • Tom Finkelpearl – PUBLIC – Executive Director, Queen’s Museum of Art and author of Dialogues in Public Art

Host Dara Metz, Director, MagnanMetz Gallery, welcomed guests and Amy Kaufman, Managing Director US, Lord Cultural Resources, introduced speakers and moderated conversation.
